College investigates cheating sports students

SEVERAL students have gained enrollment to a college in central China's Henan Province as sports majors by using fake certificates they bought for between 60,000 yuan (US$8,790) to 100,000 yuan.

Nanyang Normal College has asked its staff to double check the credentials of its freshmen, recruitment director Wang Qinglin told today's China Youth Daily.

Wang said the college has suggested the provincial sports authority to check the certificates of sporting achievements, said.

Last year, the college enrolled 120 sports majors from Henan, Shandong and Shaanxi provinces. The tuition fee for sports majors is 8,000 yuan per semester, compared with 3,000 yuan for other majors, according to Wang.

However, research by China Youth Daily found that several colleges in Henan charged students up to 100,000 yuan to train them before college enrollment, providing them with fake certificates of achievement.
