College student arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and murder of female school mate
A 23-year-old male student from the Communication University of China was detained today on charges of sexually assaulting and murdering a female student who had been reported missing since last Sunday, police said in a statement.
The victim, a postgraduate student at Communication University of China, left her dorm last Sunday around noon to film scenes with a crew led by her alleged assailant.
She did not show up at her colleague’s wedding the next day, as had been originally planned. Friends were unable to get in contact with either her or the suspect.
This morning, at a motel near the university, police arrested the suspect, who subsequently confessed to attempting to rape and murdering the female student. The case is undergoing further investigation.
In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Beijing police reportedly gave her surname as Zhou.
A WeChat message saying she was missing had spread among the college students and other users.
The message identified her as Zhou Yunlu, who majored in acting and was in the second year of her graduate studies before her death.
Beijing police acted on a missing-person report from the university late Monday and arrested a male suspect named Li.
Li told police that he killed Zhou after he failed to rape her. Zhou reportedly was performing in a role for a crew organized by Li.
