College student gets death for fatal assault

A 21-year-old college student in Sichuan Province was sentenced to death yesterday for killing a girl student and hurting two boy students in late March, West China Metropolis Daily reported.

The court said Zeng Shijie, a student of Sichuan University, was in his right mind when he committed the murder as proven by tests done by the Chengdu Rongcheng Judicial Expertise Center. Therefore, he should take full responsibility of the crime.

Zeng said he would consider whether appeal the death sentence but his family expressed strong will to appeal, said Zeng's lawyer, Yao Fei.

"Personally I think even if they appeal, the verdict can hardly be changed," Yao told the newspaper.

Zeng was accused of killing his schoolmate Peng Dan and hacking two other students on March 30 with a knife on the campus. He confessed to police that he did this for revenge because he suffered discrimination due to his appearance.

However, one of Zeng's fellow students told the newspaper that they never discriminated him because of his appearance. "In fact, he looks pretty gentle."

The newspaper said Zeng probably picked his target in random because by now there was no evidence showing that Zeng really knew the victims.
