Colonel suspended in air attendant attack
A MILITARY officer has been suspended and is being investigated over accusations that he attacked a female flight attendant on a China Southern Airlines flight last week.
Fang Daguo, a colonel and military director of the militia force department of Yuexiu District of Guangzhou, was suspended on Sunday and will be dealt with after the investigation, People's Daily reported yesterday.
Fang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Yuexiu District People's Congress, was seen by witnesses to pinch the arm of the air attendant. He and his wife also verbally abused her in a dispute over where he should put his suitcase on a flight from Hefei to Guangzhou, witnesses said.
A Central African Republic student who was sitting next to the couple has also said Fang appeared to be drunk before getting onboard, adding that his wife scratched her own arm and then blamed the attendant.
The case caused a stir online after the attendant posted on Weibo on Wednesday that Fang beat, insulted and scratched her. She posted pictures of bruises and scratches on her arms and neck that she said had been caused by Fang and his wife. Her uniform was also ripped.
However, the district's publicity department issued a statement on Friday saying that Fang had never beaten the attendant and that both parties have reached an agreement.
Xinhua news agency questioned the district government on the Internet over the weekend as to "why the publicity department hurriedly publicized the so-called result without a complete and objective investigation." Xinhua's Guangzhou branch asked on Weibo if "the result you publicized is actually different from what you have reached during the investigation?"
The district's publicity department did not respond. The questions were reposted more than 30,000 times.
According to the attendant, who has not been named, the conflict began when she asked Fang and his wife to move their luggage from the middle of the aisle. But the couple demanded she move equipment from the luggage rack to make room.
After she explained the equipment could not be moved, Fang hit her on the shoulder with his bag and the insults began, the attendant said. When Fang saw that the attendant was taking pictures of the scene, he attacked her and ripped her uniform, the attendant said.
On Friday, she announced that the couple had apologized. She thanked others for support.
