Comic's apprentices quit over real punchline

TWO apprentices of China's most famous stand-up comedian Guo Degang said they have left their master and his comedy troupe after Guo defended his apprentice for beating up a Beijing Television reporter.
He Yunwei and Li Jing, Guo's two most successful apprentices, made the announcement on He's blog yesterday. They said they will hold a news conference soon to clear up the matter with the troupe Deyunshe.
Their fellow apprentice Li Hebiao, who attacked BTV reporter Zhou Wenfu on Sunday, was detained for seven days and fined 200 yuan (US$29) by Beijing police on Thursday.
Zhou was attempting to interview Guo to verify reports that Guo had illegally extended his property onto public green space. Li Hebiao punched Zhou repeatedly. His violence was recorded by the reporter and the clip circulated on the Internet, sparking a public outcry.
BTV has stopped broadcasting any programs involving Deyunshe after Guo threatened the television station.
"If I go down, BTV will go down, don't use my men if you (BTV) want to play tough with me," Guo said.
The apprentices who quit both hosted a comedy program at BTV.
Legal Mirror speculated that He and Li must have given up their master to continue their television careers.
Guo posted a bitter blog note early Thursday attacking Zhou personally and saying he deserved to be beaten up for breaking into his property. He added that reporters were not even as respectful as hookers.
But later Guo softened his tone, saying he did not mean to attack all reporters.
