Community patrolman gets 6 years' jail for rape

A FORMER community patrolman in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, was yesterday sentenced to six years in prison for raping and beating up a woman, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Yang Xili, who used to work as a patrolman in a community in the city's Bao'an District, has appealed the verdict. His two accomplices, surnamed Ye and Yan, however, accepted their one-and-a-half-year and one-year sentences, respectively.

The prosecutor said Yang, who was drunk, broke into the house of Yang Wu, 31, with a steel rod and a police baton about 8pm on October 23 last year.

He smashed up the furniture and other things in the house and caught Yang Wu's 29-year-old wife who tried to stop him from further destruction while the petrified husband rushed to hide in a closet

The newspaper said Yang Xili told his henchmen to guard the door and started to beat up the wife, during which she was also raped. The cowardly husband stayed inside the closet only a few meters from the bedroom where his wife was being physically and sexually assaulted.

The husband, however, pursued the trio after they left the house and reported to police about an hour later.

Yang Wu, a native of Linquan County in east China's Anhui Province, came to Shenzhen 11 years ago and ran a home appliance repair store. He bumped into Yang Xili, who was his primary schoolmate, one day on the street and then the latter often bullied him, sometimes indulging in violence.

The newspaper said Yang Xili had a history of violence against poor residents when inebriated. He was jailed for three years for robbery in 2004.
