Companies, entrepreneurs and celebrities rally round

CHINESE and multinational companies, entrepreneurs and celebrities were quick yesterday to make and pledge donations to the earthquake-hit area in Sichuan Province.

Taiwan tycoon Terry Tai-Ming Gou's Foxconn Group donated 50 million yuan (US$8.08m) to the Sichuan government last night.

Hong Kong-listed Evergrande Group will donate 20 million yuan, said the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.

And German automaker Mercedes-Benz said that it would donate 20 million yuan to the area.

Shanghai-based airline China Eastern pledged 10 million yuan and offered the use of its aircraft. Rescue materials were airlifted from Shanghai to Sichuan Province last night.

Chinese liquor maker Wuliangye has donated the same sum.

Inner Mongolia diary producer Mengniu said it would also donate 10 million yuan and volunteers are bringing 10,000 cartons of milk.

Property developer Dalian Wanda Group is to donate 10 million yuan, while fellow property developer SOHO pledged 5 million yuan.

Numerous insurance companies, banks and Internet giants are also giving millions of yuan.

Entrepreneur Shi Yuzhu donated 7 million yuan, while other donors include: actress/director Zhao Wei 500,000 yuan; actor Huang Xiaoming 300,000 yuan; and actress Li bingbing 200,000 yuan.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola has transported 2,000 cartons of drinking water to the area for rescue work.
