Company owns up to BaP-tainted oil

AN edible oil maker suddenly changed its mind and admitted that nine batches of its products contained excessive carcinogen, two weeks after it vehemently denied the allegation.

Jinhao Camellia Oil Co Ltd in central China's Hunan Province said about 42 tons of oil produced between last December and March was tainted by Benzo (a) Pyrene, or BaP, a cancer-causing substance.

The company said it knew about the problem this March as local quality inspectors seized 22.4 tons in its warehouse. Jinhao secretly recalled the oil from the market but never issued any public warning to customers.

Local food safety authorities have found BaP in Jinhao's cooking oil six times higher than the accepted level.

News about its tainted oil has been swirling online since early August, but the company made a statement on August 20 saying the allegations were "ridiculous rumors" made by its competitors.
