Company secretly recalled food oil

AN edible-oil manufacturer in central China secretly recalled several of its products because they contained excessive cancer-promoting substances, the Century Weekly reported.

Local government knew all about the recall but kept quiet about it, the magazine added. A senior official told the weekly the cover-up was a way to safeguard social stability because people's livelihoods depend on grain and oil.

In March, the Jinhao Camellia Oil Co Ltd, in Qiyang County of Hunan Province, found six times the acceptable amount of the chemical benzo(a)pyrene in several of its camellia seed oil products.

A senior official in the Hunan quality administration told Century Weekly that Jinhao carried out the recall and improved its process with the assistance of an industry expert introduced by the provincial quality watchdog to solve the problem, but without disclosing any details.

However, Hunan Province's quality watchdog has never published the result as a warning to customers.
