Company to seek customs ban on iPads
A CHINESE company says it is planning to ask for a ban on the import and export of Apple's iPads as a dispute over ownership of the trademark spilled over to online shops.
All Apple's iPads are manufactured in China, meaning global sales of the tablet computers will be affected if authorities agreed to such a request by Proview Technology (Shenzhen).
The dispute with Proview, which won a court ruling over ownership of the iPad name on Chinese mainland, has resulted in authorities seizing iPads from retailers in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province, and Henan's provincial capital Zhengzhou. Proview said it had asked for enforcement in about 30 other cities.
"We are now working on a request to China Customs to ban and seize all imports and exports of iPad products that have violated the trademark," Xie Xianghui, a Proview lawyer, told The Associated Press.
Following seizures in Shijiazhuang, authorities in Zhengzhou raided an authorized Apple retailer and sealed the store's iPad stock.
Stores in the central China city responded by removing iPads from shelves, according to Xinhua news agency.
Authorities in other cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, said they were still looking into the case.
The dispute has also spread to online shops with iPad vendor accounts disappearing from amazon.cn and 360buy.
