Compensation Reports Denied
THE Ministry of Railway has denied media reports that the family of an Italian woman killed in the July 23 train crash near Wenzhou would receive much higher compensation than Chinese families.
Reports said the ministry would be paying 30 million euros to the family of 22-year-old Liguori Assunta.
Assunta was traveling with her 23-year-old boyfriend Pan Yuehan, who is a Wenzhou native with Italian citizenship. He was seriously injured but survived.
The ministry said it would pay 915,000 yuan (US$143,170) compensation for each victim of the crash and the Italian victim's family would be treated in the same way as the families of Chinese victims.
