Compensation of 1.23m sought as ex-officer going to trial in pregnant stallholder’s killing

A FORMER police officer accused of shooting a pregnant noodle stallholder to death will go to trial on suspicion of intentional homicide tomorrow morning in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Beijing Youth Daily reported today.

Also, a compensation claim of over 1.23 million yuan (US$202,950) has been filed by the parents of Wu Ying, the victim who died along with her 5-month unborn child after she was shot by Hu Ping, the newspaper said. Hu is the former deputy police chief in Pingnan County of Guangxi.

Hu, drunk at the time, is accused of shooting Wu and her husband after they said they couldn’t serve him milk tea because they didn’t have it. The husband was wounded but survived.

Hu had been fired from the police and dismissed from the Party, according to the newspaper.

If convicted, he could be sentenced to death, life imprisonment or imprisonment of not less than 10 years, according to Chinese Criminal Law.
