Compensation ordered for fatal cradle fire

A two-month girl was burnt to death in an electric rocking cradle after it caught fire in Foshan, southern Guangdong Province. A local court yesterday ordered the manufacturer and dealer to pay the family 370,000 yuan (US$58,400) in compensation.

A short circuit caused the fire on the night of December 2010 when the baby was sleeping alone on the cradle. Her parents noticed the fire, put it out and sent the baby to a hospital. But she died before emergency treatment.

The Nanhai District People's Court ruled that the manufacturer and its dealer must compensate the girl's family with 370,000 yuan (US$58,423), the local newspaper New Express reported.

The court also ruled the girl's parents failed to take good care of their baby and therefore had 30 percent of the responsibility, the paper said.
