Concern over TB cases at Hunan school
A recent outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) in central China鈥檚 Hunan Province has drawn the public鈥檚 attention.
Last Friday, the provincial health and family planning commission said 29 students of a middle school in Taojiang County were found to have TB last Thursday, and five others were suspected of being infected.
To date, 38 students have used medication, and 72 have received treatment, said the commission.
On Friday, the staff of the National Health and Family Planning Commission arrived in Taojiang County to help contain the outbreak.
The local government said the school has about 3,000 students. Of the infected students, 25 were in the same class. All the infected students were to sit for the National College Entrance Examination in a few months.
The first case of infection occurred in January, said Zeng Shengda from Taojiang County鈥檚 disease control and prevention center.
Between February and July, five students visited the center to be examined and treated for TB. On August 6 and 8, three more students sought treatment at the center.
In August, the county government launched medical screening for all the school鈥檚 students.
The provincial and county authorities are still investigating the cause of the disease鈥檚 outbreak.
