Concern over student’s death
THE Chinese government expressed its concern yesterday over the death of a Syracuse University student from Beijing whose body was found behind an apartment complex near the campus. Yuan Xiaopeng, 23, was found dead after residents nearby reported hearing gunshots on Friday. Syracuse University in New York State said in a statement that Yuan was a junior studying mathematics, and that his death appeared to be an “isolated incident.” The Chinese Consulate in New York said it had received assurances that authorities “attached great importance” to Yuan’s case. Officials had requested police ensure the personal safety and rights of Chinese students.
