Condolences from around the world
RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to President Xi Jinping in the wake of the earthquake, expressing “words of sympathy and support to friends and relatives of those killed and wished soonest recovery to all injured,” the Kremlin press service said.
In New York, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was “saddened by the loss of life, and the damage to homes and infrastructure.”
Among others expressing their sympathy were South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
On Sunday, the White House offered condolences over the loss of life, saying the United States was ready to help.
