Confusion grows in charity scandal

THE woman who claimed to be the general manager of the "Red Cross Commerce" and boasted about her lavish lifestyle online denied yesterday that her boyfriend was a former board member of a company that organizes Red Cross projects.

Guo Meimei was forced to clarify the matter as rumors swirling over the Internet had "seriously affected her personal life." Guo claimed her boyfriend was 25 years old, instead of the 46-year-old Wang Jun, former board member of Zhonghong Bo'ai Asset Management Co. But she didn't reveal her boyfriend's identity, according to tweets published yesterday on her microblog on Weibo.com.

Guo asked the netizens not to make up stories, twist facts or make personal attacks.

Her online clarification once again cast a mystery over the source of her wealth. Her boyfriend was previously reported to be Wang, who mainly engaged in equity investment, according to Weng Tao, CEO of Zhonghong Bo'ai.

Guo indeed is Wang's new girlfriend, Weng said, adding that Wang gave her designer handbags and luxury sports cars.

Wang said Guo overheard his conversation with business partners about the Red Cross project and made up the "Red Cross Commerce" general manager title because she thought it would impress people, said Weng.

The total assets of Guo and her mother, including properties, don't exceed 10 million yuan, Caijing Magazine reported, citing police investigations. The villas and cars Guo showed off were not owned by them, the magazine said.

Guo's parents divorced and Guo has been living with her mother. The identity of her father is unknown.

Meanwhile, Wang's wife, surnamed Mo, said she is not aware of the alleged relationship between her husband and Guo, but she admitted the Lamborghini sports car Guo posed with in online photos was owned by Wang, the Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday.

Mo insisted she knew nothing about Guo when interviewed by the Shenzhen Evening News at her home in Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province. Wang has not commented.
