Construction wastes dumped on lake
THE vessels caught dumping garbage on Friday in Xishan Island on Taihu Lake were carrying construction wastes from Shanghai, authorities said.
The wastes were transported from Huibin Wharf in Jiading District and Yujidun Wharf in Changning District, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday, citing Suzhou police.
The docks were not registered with the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, Xinhua said, quoting Zou Hua, the director of the garbage management department of the bureau.
The dumping spot at the Taihu drug rehabilitation center was not registered with the bureau as well. The construction wastes were to be used by the drug center for landfill of sunken swale, abandoned pools and pits, Xinhua said.
The drug center had entrusted Jinlu Construction and Engineering Co in Kunshan City, which is administrated by Suzhou, to carry three million cubic meters of earthwork, including construction garbage, Xinhua reported.
It is illegal to transport wastes produced in Shanghai to sites outside the city, according to regulations. Construction wastes that meet the city’s reuse criteria must be reported and registered before being transported to other cities.
By Wednesday, Suzhou police had detained 12 people for causing environmental damage. Eight of them are out on bail.
