Controversy over Good Samaritan's fatal chase
A "Good Samaritan" knocked down three looters riding a motorcycle while giving them a chase in his car in Guangzhou, southern Guangdong Province, killing one and injuring the other two.
The incident has aroused much controversy over whether the man should be held liable for causing the fatal accident.
The three robbers allegedly snatched a handbag from a woman surnamed Li and slashed her hand on Tuesday night, the local New Express Daily reported yesterday.
They searched her handbag, picked valuable items and threw away the empty bag. Then they rode off on a motorcycle, the report said.
The woman called for help and a man driving a sport utility vehicle responded and gave the gang a chase. The man's identity was not revealed in the report.
Later the SUV hit the motorcycle and ran over one of the three looters.
Local police are investigating the accident and are calling witnesses to provide more details.
"The man is suspicious of excessive defense. Even though he was chasing for the woman, it doesn't mean he would not be charged," Lu Yuxing, a lawyer with Guangdong Shenglun Law Firm, told the newspaper.
