Convict and victim's dad spar over court sentence
The deputy dean of Jiangxi University of Agriculture, who was sentenced to three years in prison for a drunk-driving accident that left two dead and four injured, has appealed the court ruling and asked for a reprieve on grounds that he was a high-tech expert.
The deadly accident happened last March when Liao Weiming, the convict, was driving under the influence of alcohol after a school banquet and ploughed into a crowd in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province.
Yang Fei, a postgraduate student, died of injuries, and her parents also appealed the court ruling and demanded a tougher sentence for Liao, the Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Her father Yang Guowei said Liao drove into the crowd to avoid being hit by a bus. "He knew he would jeopardize the lives of some students but he still did that. He should be punished for jeopardizing public security, not traffic offence," Yang said.
If the outraged father wins the appeal, Liao would get at least 10 years in prison, the paper said.
The 59-year-old professor said he had signed an agreement of reconciliation and compensation totaling 2.1 million yuan (US$332,640) with the six families in exchange for leniency from them.
"Yang betrayed his promise," Liao said with indignation.
But Yang Guowei said he would like to return the 700,000 yuan he received and pleaded the court to give Liao a harsh punishment.
