Convicted drunk driver warns others
A DRUNK driver jailed for life yesterday for killing five people and injuring four when driving five times over the alcohol limit has warned others not to drink alcohol.
Zhang Mingbao, the 43-year-old Nanjing native responsible for the carnage, told Yangtze Evening Post today that he was foolish to drive after drinking. He said he was too confident because the restaurant was near his home and he had driven safely home while drunk many times before.
Victims' families screamed at him yesterday in court demanding a retrial and the death penalty.
Zhang crashed his car into a crowded pavement on June 30, killing five, including a woman who was seven months pregnant.
He said he could understand the sadness of the victims' families. "Every day for me has turned into a living torture," Zhang told the newspaper, "I would rather their relatives hit me hard or even kill me right in the courtroom."
He also said he was willing to financially support all relatives of the victims,.
Zhang's blood alcohol level was 381 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood, nearly five times the legal limit, when he was tested after the accident.
Zhang said he cried when he found out what he did through police investigation. He said he had no memory of the night at all.
