Convicted murderer expecting 3rd child

A YOUNG mother who was sentenced to life imprisonment for leaving her two young daughters at home, causing them to starve to death, is expected to deliver her third child next month in Nanjing City, Modern Express Daily reported yesterday.

Had Le Yan not been pregnant at the time, the 23-year-old would likely have been sentenced to death for her crime. Instead, Le hasn’t spent a single day in prison after she was jailed for life for murder in September. She currently lives in a 20-square-meter room that has a bathroom, television and two beds, the report said. A video camera was placed in the corner to record everything.

Le shares the room with one person who watches her.

However, Le isn’t complaining.

“Since I was born, the only time I have felt any warmth was after I was caught,” she told the newspaper.

As a child born out of wedlock she didn’t have a hukou, or household registration. She was raised by her father’s parents and didn’t go to school until she was 10. She quit three years later, Southern Weekend reported.

‘Gift from God’

Le told Zhou Kan, a judge with Nanjing Intermediate People’s Court, that she plans to start serving her life sentence within two months of delivering her baby. She has the right to remain outside prison for breast feeding but doesn’t want to do so for too long.

“I don’t want to spend too long with my child,” Le told the newspaper, with tears in her eyes. “It will be better for both of us. Otherwise we will miss each other.

“I will perform well in prison to get my jail term commuted.”

Le also said she wanted to name her baby Jia, the Chinese word for home and family, if the child is a boy and sees this as a chance to make amends in some small way.

“I am to blame for two deaths,” she was quoted as saying. “It is fair for me to die. But I am lucky another child comes to me. It is a gift from God.”
