Convict's freedom ends

POLICE in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province yesterday caught one of the two convicts who escaped from a prison in the provincial capital of Harbin.

Sun Xingchen, 23, was captured on the highway linking Harbin to Beijing. He fled with 21-year-old Chen Congcong from Liming Prison on Tuesday. Chen is still at large.

Police offered a cash reward of up to 100,000 yuan (US$14,700) for information leading to the capture of the two convicts.

A source close to the prison authority said the two escaped while clearing snow with other prisoners outside their cells, but this has not been confirmed by police.

The source, who requested anonymity, told news Website Sina.com.cn that the escapees had just begun 10-year jail terms for robbery.

Meanwhile, three policemen in Hebei Province have been suspended after a convict in their charge escaped by driving off in a police car, a local official said yesterday.

The 33-year-old convict Li Jinbo was recaptured on Wednesday, one day after he fled while he was under escort. He was arrested at a gas station.

Despite being handcuffed, he managed to drive off in the police car which was later found abandoned on a country road. Li had been jailed for theft and robbery.

Police have not revealed details about how he managed to make his getaway.
