Cooped-up mute girl gets some counselling

A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl who lost the power of speech after being held in a chicken coop for about a year by her grandmother will undergo a month of psychological counseling at an orphanage in southwest China to help her recover.

The government of Longtan Town of Chongqing Municipality's Fuling District sent the girl to the orphanage on Wednesday, the Chongqing Evening News reported yesterday.

The grandmother, Guo Changshou, 63, faces punishment if convicted of abuse, according to Longtan government official Yang Linjin.

The Longtan government is discussing the girl's future with officials in the girl's mother's hometown in Guizhou Province. The girl's father left her in Guo's care three years ago when he moved elsewhere to find work after her mother died.

Feeling helpless having to take care of the girl alone while also working in the field, widowed Guo started to confine her to a hencoop from last summer.

A passer-by discovered the girl early this month and reported it to the local government, which freed the girl on July 11, the report said.
