Cop arrested for migrant worker’s death

A POLICE officer in north China’s Taiyuan City was arrested for abusing power and allegedly beating up a woman to death.

A picture showing the police officer, surnamed Wang, beating a female migrant worker at a construction site has circulated widely on China’s twitter-like Sina Weibo. But an officer with the city police had claimed the picture was taken from a “wrong angle” and was misleading.

The woman, 47-year-old Zhou Xiuyun, was later found dead.

The incident took place on December 13, when Zhou’s son Wang Kuilin and three other workers went to the construction site to demand their delayed salaries. Worried about their son, Zhou and her husband followed them to the site.

The guard on the site called the police. Zhou’s son said the police officer pulled his mother’s hair and twisted her neck. Zhou’s husband Wang Youzhi said she was beaten because she tried to stop the police officer from handcuffing him.

Zhou remained motionless on the ground for nearly one hour but the police officer stamped on her head and accused her of playing dead, Wang Kuilin said.

An unconscious Zhou was dumped into a police car and taken to the police station along with her husband and son. Wang Youzhi said they were locked up in different sections at the station where he was beaten. A medical check later found that Wang had broken four ribs.

Wang Youzhi said his wife was handcuffed two meters away from him but she did not respond to his calls. “The officers woke me up at 3am and told me she was dead,” he said.

Police said Zhou’s family had yet to agree for an autopsy, which would help determine the cause of her death.
