Cop catches girl in suicidal jump, both unscathed

A traffic policeman in Chongqing, western China, successfully caught a girl who jumped off a 6-meter-high overpass in a suicide attempt on Tuesday morning and neither of them was injured, the Chongqing Evening Post reported today.

Wang Jing, 31, was on patrol when he received a report that a young girl was about to jump from an overpass near the Yuanjiagang Metro station. He rushed to the spot within two minutes and saw a girl sitting on the banister of the overpass. Wang asked his colleagues to cordon off the area and he himself stood under the bridge to comfort the girl.

Wang's words fell on deaf ears. The girl suddenly jumped off at 1:35am. Wang stepped forth, caught the girl in his arms and fell back to the ground purposely to offset the impact. They both got up immediately. Medical examination afterwards showed no one was injured.

It was still unknown why the 17-year-old girl surnamed Zhang wanted to take her life, the newspaper said.

Someone calculated that the moment Wang caught the girl, it was like a 440kg object hitting his arms.

Wang told the newspaper that he used to be a goalkeeper at school and that helped him to catch the girl as if catching a ball.
