A MAN in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was confirmed to have been accidentally shot dead early Saturday by a police officer, who had fired a warning shot while trying to disperse a group of youngsters causing trouble outside a nightclub.

The victim surnamed Luo was at his fifth floor home in Fengshan County, Hechi City, about 1am when an officer on the street below fired a warning shot against a youngster waving a knife at him, China News Service reported yesterday.

The warning shot hit Luo in the head. He was sent to hospital but was pronounced dead later that day.

The officer was dispatched to break up a group of youngsters allegedly causing trouble after drinking outside a nightclub.

The officer was besieged at the scene and forced to fire the warning shot, according to the report.

Police now want to investigate the nine people involved in the attempted assault on the officer.

Meanwhile, a police officer in neighboring Guizhou Province was detained in February on a charge of improper gun use.
