Cop linked to gambler's 19-story death plunge
A TRAFFIC policeman in eastern China's Zhejiang Province has been linked to the death of a gambler who fell from the 19th floor of a building on January 25.
The officer, who was identified as Mu Ruiping, was reported to have had a dispute over a gambling debt with the dead man, according to Qianjiang Evening News.
The 53-year-old victim, whose name was not disclosed, was reported to owe Mu 60,000 yuan (US$8,763).The newspaper said Mu's wife Chen ran a casino at their home. Mu was also said to have a gambling debt, owing 60,000 yuan to a creditor called Li Xiuhong.
Mu asked Li to help him demand payment from the victim, who lived in a 29-story building in Zhejiang's Ruian City.
The victim was found dead on the ground beneath the building at 11:30am, wearing only a pair of boxer shorts.
The newspaper said he had visited Chen's casino frequently but always lost.
Whether he fell or jumped is still unknown, but a forensic test showed no traces of fighting in his room, only the victim's handprint on the railing of the balcony, according to Ruian Public Security Bureau.
The newspaper report said Mu and Li burst into the victim's room and demanded money. The victim refused.
According to Mu's account of the events, while he and Li were both out of the room they heard a cry and came back to find the victim had fallen from the balcony.
Mu later surrendered to police and is now being confined by the bureau.
A resident on the 17th floor saw the victim falling and called the building's security guard, said Wen Zuohong, one of the building's janitors.
