Cop linked to insider-trader stands trial
A FORMER senior cop in China's Ministry of Public Security stood trial yesterday in Beijing for bribery.
Xiang Huaizhu, deputy head of the ministry's economic crime investigation unit, faced court in Beijing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court on charges of taking huge bribes and protecting Huang Guangyu, founder of Gome Electrical Appliances Holdings, who was arrested over stock-market manipulation and insider trading.
It was a closed trial and the court did not say how much money Xiang was involved with.
The 46-year-old former officer was put under "double designation" status last January with Zheng Shaodong, head of the ministry's economic crime investigation unit and assistant to the public security minister, for taking "huge bribes" to protect Huang, named by Forbes magazine as the second-richest man on the Chinese mainland in 2007.
"Double designation" means an investigative procedure where a Party official is ordered to confront allegations of disciplinary violations or corruption at a designated time and place.
Huang's case has brought down more than 1,000 officials who covered up his behavior in the past decade, according to an earlier report.
Several heavyweight officials including Wang Huayuan, a disciplinary supervising head in Zhejiang Province, and Lian Zhuozhao, a senior Guangdong political adviser, have been arrested and punished over their links with Huang.
Lian was named "casino king of the high seas" for inviting officials and businessmen to gamble on his boat.
Huang's trial will start soon this month in the same court. The court has pushed back his trial to give prosecutors more time to investigate.
