Cop locks himself with thief as he is mobbed by gang
A Chongqing policeman locked himself with a thief with handcuffs and was severely beaten by a gang of thieves on January 30, but he foiled the culprit's attempt to escape, Chongqing Evening News reported today.
Wang Jie, the 28-year-old policeman, was later sent to hospital for treatment of bruises in his face, chest, arms and legs. All the five gang members had been seized and put in detention, Chongqing police said.
At about 7am on January 30, Wang and his colleague Wang Yong were patrolling in plainclothes at a long-distance bus station in Chongqing as they had received a report that a gang of thieves were preying on holiday travelers there.
They soon saw a man in the act and was about to run off. Wang Jie yelled at him and rushed to catch him while Wang Yong went to check with the victim.
After a short chase, Wang Jie grabbed the suspect and put the handcuffs on his left wrist but the suspect resisted violently. Suddenly, Wang got a heavy blow in the head and fists began to rain on him. He realized other gang members had come to the thief's rescue.
After about 10 minutes of beating, Wang felt he was about to pass out and with his last strength, he clamped another handcuff on his own wrist.
At the sight of other policemen running toward them, the gang dispersed quickly except the handcuffed man lying next to Wang who already lost consciousness.
"I really didn't know how many of them were beating me," Wang told the newspaper later in hospital. "I didn't have time to think about the consequence. I just wanted to handcuff that guy."
