Cop on trial over prison bribery

A POLICE officer is standing trial in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality for allegedly providing favorable treatment for prisoners after taking bribes in cash and sex.

The 41-year-old officer faced Yuzhong District People's Court yesterday, today's Chongqing Evening News reported.

The officer surnamed Wei allegedly took 63,000 yuan (US$9,230) from 2006 to 2007 to arrange for four prisoners to serve their jail terms outside prison, the court heard.

Wei allegedly promised 15 percent of the money in commission to a broker surnamed Chen but failed to pay the money, Chen told the court.

Wei denied Chen's testimony, saying that he knew only one of the four prisoners.
