Cop probed for killing child in drunk driving

A police officer in southwest China's Yunnan Province is under investigation after an online post accused him of drunk driving and crushing a toddler to death, authorities said today.

Li Ying, chief of the Huanghua Police Station in Yongshan County, allegedly drove a police car at a high speed yesterday afternoon under the influence of alcohol and rolled over a three-year-old child on the street.

Instead of showing remorse, Li said he could settle the case with money, a netizen identified as Ruochu wrote on www.kunming.cn, a popular website in the provincial capital of Kunming.

Other netizens also said Li was notorious among local villagers for conspiring with others to buy barren hills for the purpose of obtaining compensation when a hydropower project is located there.

Yongshan County spokesman confirmed today that Li has been held for investigation after the post sparked an outcry on the Internet. Li and his police station haven't made any comment on the allegations.
