Cop said to take sex, cash for favors

A POLICE officer is standing trial in Chongqing City for allegedly providing favorable treatment for prisoners after taking bribes in money and sex.

The 41-year-old officer faced the court at Yuzhong District People's Court, yesterday's Chongqing Evening News reported.

The officer, identified as Wei in the report, allegedly took 63,000 yuan (US$9,230) from 2006 to 2007 to arrange four prisoners to serve their jail terms outside prison - a privilege meant for prisoners who are too sick to serve their terms in jail or whose families are too poor, the court heard.

The four prisoners Wei had helped were recidivists, who were disqualified for the privilege, the court heard.

Wei allegedly told a broker surnamed Chen that he could help arrange the special treatment for prisoners and promised to give him 15 percent of the money he took, Chen told the court yesterday.

Chen then asked Wei to help arrange the treatment for four prisoners and paid him 63,000 yuan. To make a good relationship with Wei, Chen also ordered sex service for Wei, he told the court.

But Wei never paid the promised commission fees to Chen, Chen said.

He raised the prices for the prisoners to take his share, Chen said.

Wei denied Chen's testimony, saying he only knew one of the four prisoners.

He stressed he had not the power to arrange the privilege, because his job was not related to prison matters.

Wei was arrested in September last year.
