Cop surrenders in fatal drunk-driving accident in Henan
A policeman has been detained in Xinxian County, central Henan Province for drunk driving and killing a motorcyclist in a crash, Dahe Daily reported today.
Xu Xinjian, an officer of a police station in Xinxian County, turned himself in on September 6 after he fled the scene the night before, the newspaper said.
The 23-year-old motorcyclist surnamed Zhao died hours after the crash that happened on the evening of September 5. His girlfriend surnamed Zhou, who sat behind him, was injured.
Xu's police car lost control at about 11pm and hit a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, leaving the two riders injured.
However, as a cop, Xu didn't report to the police but abandoned his car and fled the scene, witnesses said.
"Alcohol test showed he was drunk driving," said an officer from the Xinxian Public Security Bureau.
A netizen posted a picture on the Internet, which showed Xu's police car had a shattered windscreen, a damaged headlamp and a dangling roof-mounted light bar.
Zhou suffered light injuries and was recovering well. Her medical bills were paid by the police bureau, the paper said.
