Cops apologize for assuming thin man is addict

POLICE in Xichang, Sichuan Province, apologized yesterday for assuming a thin man was a drug addict, handcuffing him and taking him down to the police station for a urine test, local Western China Metropolis Daily reported today.

The mistaken identity took place in Xichang City, in the southwest of Sichuan Province.

The man, surnamed Li, who is 1.75 meters tall but weighs only about 55 kilograms, was stopped by plainclothes police when he was shopping on the street at 10am last Saturday.

Police released him after a urine test was negative for drugs. Police officials said Li’s build led them to suspect he was an addict.
