AN unmarried couple in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, lured police into wrongly detaining two of their daughters for prostitution and faked their virginity reports to demand compensation.
Kunming prosecutors and police announced the results of their investigation Tuesday night, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The father Liu Shihua was arrested and Zhang Anfeng, the mother, was released on bail, Kunming police said.
Prosecutors denied the couple's claim that police had beaten them for confessions after they were detained.
Police said Liu and Zhang forced their daughter Chen Yan (not her real name) to work as a prostitute at their home from October 2008.
On March 16, patrol officers from Kunming's Wangjiaqiao police station noticed Chen took a man surnamed Wang into their residence. The officers, who are not licensed to conduct arrests, alerted other police to come for a raid.
Seeing police patrol staff waiting outside his home, Liu plotted with Zhang and their friend Pu Enfu and decided to fool the police, the report said.
They hid Chen and then got Zhang's elder daughter to put on Chen's clothes and escort Wang out of their home.
Police rounded up six people at the scene - Liu, Zhang, Pu, Zhang's two daughters and another family friend. Chen was not arrested as she was hiding inside. The six were released the next morning as police said they were not caught in the act.
On March 20, the couple lodged complaints to the police and asked for compensation of 200,000 yuan (US$29,000).
After the talks failed, they provided fake virginity reports to local media to publish, the report said. They also claimed police had beaten them up in detention as Pu reported two broken ribs.
But a police investigation found the broken ribs were caused during the arrest as Pu had resisted officers.
Police didn't beat them to force a confession, prosecutors confirmed after investigating. But prosecutors did say the officers mishandled the arrest.
