Cops attacked by mob hired to settle business dispute

A mob of unidentified people attacked policemen in Yulin City, northwest Shaanxi Province and smashed a police car in a bid to set their arrested fellow free.

A police chief in the city's Mahuangliang Industrial Zone, Xie Anyi, was beaten up and the windows of a police car were smashed, the local Sanqin Daily reported today.

Two scores of men were involved in the attack. They came in three vans and five cars with hidden license plates and surrounded the office of Shanghe Coal Mine Co Ltd in the industrial zone last Friday, witness Feng Jingxi told the newspaper.

The company employees alerted the police and these men scurried off at the sight of Xie and other six policemen. But they soon returned to get back one of their members who was caught by the police, Feng said.

An insider said these men might be hired to cause troubles to Shanghe because of an internal dispute over share distribution.

Official investigation into the case is ongoing.
