Cops look for killer of boy, 8

Police in central China said last night that they have identified a suspect in the shooting death of a boy.

The eight-year-old was shot when riding with his family on a motor tricycle in downtown Shaodong County in Hunan Province on Tuesday morning and died at a hospital despite rescue efforts. He was the second victim of gunshots within a week in the county.

Police said they have made "breakthrough" progress in the investigation, without giving details, according to the Xinhua news agency.

The boy surnamed Xie, a first-grade student, was shot in the armpit at 2:40am when riding on the motor tricycle with his parents and brother on a busy street, China Radio International reported earlier yesterday.

The bullet was fired from the window of a black car that sped off after the shooting, a witness said. The family of four was riding home after finishing midnight snacks at a restaurant, one of the family members said. After the tricycle had moved only about 50 meters, the car passed by and a shot rang out from the car.

The bullet penetrated a nontransparent oilcloth wrapping the cabin of the tricycle and hit the boy sitting inside with his mother and three-year-old brother, a relative onboard said.

"The boy's parents were honest migrant workers who had never made enemies with others," the boy's uncle said.

The parents normally used the tricycle to transport cargo to make a living.

A 29-year-old man surnamed Huang was shot dead on another street in the county on Saturday afternoon after having quarrels with a game room boss, police said. Four suspects have been detained in that case.
