Cops micro blog for law and order

POLICE in many Chinese cities started using their own twitter-like micro blogs to keep the public in touch and informed of fraud alerts and public security news.

Police in Guangdong Province took the lead in the creation of an online public security bureau, and that's proved a step in the right direction to keep connection between officers and residents, China News Service reported yesterday.

Now all 21 cities in Guangdong have their micro blog account. Beijing police followed suit on Tuesday by starting not only a micro blog, but also a public relations department.

"With the aid of modern technology, we hope to communicate with residents and vulnerable groups with frankness and sincerity, as well as promote the publicity of social justice," said Fu Zhenghua, head of the bureau.

But residents are concerned the service will be merely a formality, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I hope the micro blog can be fully utilized, unlike those badly maintained administrative websites," said Liu Juan, an employee with an IT company in Beijing.

Moving to social networking hasn't been easy.

When police in Guangzhou, Guangdong's captial, first started to use micro blog on sina.com.cn in May, they were lambasted for not allowing other users to comment on its tweets. A day later, the ban was lifted. Now more than 6,400 people are following the department.

These micro blogs of Guangdong police were updated frequently every day.

The police used the blogs to get crime information out to help locals avoid being conned or robbed.

For example, Guangzhou police yesterday advised parents to take care of their kids as the summer vacation is getting started.

The suggestion was so detailed that officers told parents to install baby seats in the car to avoid accidents and hold to children's hands when crossing the roads.

It also informed Guangzhou locals of detours due to utility work and alerted them to recent street hustles.

As a two-way channel, police are also using the micro blogs to solicit suggestions from residents, Deng Jianwei with Guangdong police said.
