Cops probed for beating boy offender into vegetative state

AUTHORITIES in east China are investigating five police officers who allegedly tortured a 15-year-old boy in custody, causing him severe brain damage and putting him into a vegetative state.

The boy, Wang En'hui, was still in intensive care to treat life-threatening skull fractures and other injures in a provincial hospital in Hefei, Anhui Province, today's Guangxi Daily reported.

Wang was admitted to a Yingshang County hospital on August 13 after he fell into a coma while he was in police custody on charges of burglary. He was transferred to the provincial hospital as his condition deteriorated. There, the doctors announced the boy had entered a vegetative state.

His parents still don't know what happened in the detention house. Their request to see surveillance video recording was turned down by police authorities in Yingshang County. The director of the detention house surnamed Yang declined to make any comment but said the local government would cover all the medical cost for the boy's family.
