Cops sacked over truck-fine scam

SIX traffic officers in an Inner Mongolia city have been sacked for selling "prepaid fine packages" to local truck drivers in exchange for looking the other way on overloading violations.

The practice by traffic police in Ulaan Chab City of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has been going on for six or seven years, with the latest price at 1,000 yuan (US$147) per month, said local drivers Liu Zhenhong and Zhao Gang, according to Xinhua.

Officers receiving money would paint white numbers on their trucks as signs for recognition, the drivers added. Similarly, some traffic police officers in Leping City of Jiangxi Province charged local drivers 600 yuan for a month or 1,800 yuan quarterly to avoid further fines for their overloads, Xinhua said.

A driver surnamed Cheng told Xinhua that traffic police told him to pay 3,600 yuan to be free of fines for six months, or 1,900 yuan for each overloading violation.
