Cops suspended over sex-ring case
TWO high-ranking police officers in Chongqing Municipality were suspended for allegedly protecting a prostitution business in the city's Hilton hotel.
One of the officers was a district police chief and the other was a "hero cop" who was promoted two months ago for his contribution to the massive crackdown on the city's crime rings, Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday, quoting a police insider who refused to reveal the duo's names.
Hilton Chongqing was shut down on Sunday during a police raid that netted 102 suspects. Of those, 22 have been officially detained.
It was reported that Hilton Chongqing will reopen on July 6.
The report quoted anonymous insiders who said four police officers were among those caught in the raid.
Chongqing police refused to comment on the information.
Peng Zhimin, a shareholder of the hotel and a district lawmaker, has been detained for his alleged involvement in a crime ring that operated sex services and sold drugs at Hilton Chongqing.
The report said Peng was likely connected with other crime bosses who were arrested during last year's crackdown on criminal organizations.
He was not arrested at the time because he always kept a low profile and police had no evidence to implicate him.
Chongqing police gave him warnings but he refused to listen, according to the report.
Officers said Peng gave Chongqing's former police chief bribes worth a total of 300,000 yuan (US$44,100) in exchange for protection.
Peng Changjian, 47-year old deputy director of the city's public security bureau, was sentenced to life in prison for taking 4.71 million yuan in bribes and conniving with crime rings.
