Corrupt Beijing town chief gets suspended death sentence

A former town chief in Beijing was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for embezzling more than 216 million yuan (US$34 million) of public funds and taking 230,000 yuan of bribes, today's Beijing Morning Post reported.

Li Bingchun, the former boss of Liqiao Town in Beijing's Shunyi District, ordered a subordinate named Sun Qishi to illegally lend more than 148 million yuan of public money to a real estate company between June and August of 2006, the prosecutors said.

In April 2007, Li also lent 30 million yuan of public funds to another real estate company and took 8.4 million yuan in kickbacks, according to the prosecutors.

The court also heard that from 2006 to 2007, Li defrauded more than 38 million yuan of funds for relocation compensation with faked agreements.

Li also accepted a bankcard containing 80,000 yuan and a gold bar valued at 153,000 yuan from two companies for helping them win bids and land use license.

His subordinate Sun was sentenced to seven years in prison for embezzlement. The court said most of the embezzled money has been recovered.
