Corrupt city planner imprisoned

A FORMER urban planner in northern China has been jailed for eight years for malfeasance, taking bribes and having a large amount of inexplicable personal assets.

The Baotou City Intermediate People's Court in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region also found Sun Mingliang, Baotou's former vice urban planning director, guilty of abuse of power.

He "inappropriately handled his duty" with businesses' illegal structures, which cost the state 6.54 million yuan (US$957,690) in fines and land revenue, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Sun accepted about 560,000 yuan in bribes between April 2003 and August 2008.

The court found he had unaccounted assets worth nearly 1.7 million yuan.

Sun's malfeasance deserved three years' jail, Xinhua quoted the court as saying. His taking bribes made him liable for six years and his unaccounted personal assets was a conviction of a year behind bars, the court said.

However, the court decided on a combined eight-year term and confiscated 80,000 yuan worth of Sun's assets.
