Corrupt land official gets life in jail

A SENIOR land official in southwest China's Shaanxi Province has been sentenced to life in jail for corruption charges involving more than 40 million yuan (US$5.86 million).

The verdict was handed down yesterday on Mao Mingkuan, former dean of the land acquisition center with Shaanxi State Resources Administrative Bureau, by Xi'an City Intermediate People's Court, today's Legal Daily reported.

The court also confiscated 3.5 million yuan of Mao's personal wealth. The court said Mao had taken 3.17 million yuan in bribes from others after providing benefits from his post.

He was also convicted of embezzling 4.37 million yuan and misusing 35.9 million yuan of public funds, resulting in a loss of 29 million yuan for the land center.

Mao didn't appeal against the verdict in court.
