Corrupt legislator sentenced to 12 years in prison

A FORMER senior legislator in east China’s Jiangxi Province was yesterday sentenced to 12 years in prison for accepting bribes worth about 8.1 million yuan (US$1.3 million).

Chen Anzhong, the former vice chairman of the standing committee of the provincial people’s congress, took bribes from 29 people between 1996 and 2013.

In return, he abused his powers to help them with loans, contracts and promotions, the Bengbu Intermediate People’s Court in neighboring Anhui Province ruled.

The 61-year-old was also fined 800,000 yuan, and all of his ill-gotten gains were seized, the court said.

Chen said he will not appeal the verdict.

A native of central China’s Hunan Province, Chen served as mayor or Party chief of several cities in Hunan and Jiangxi before being promoted to the Jiangxi provincial legislature in 2010.

He was placed under disciplinary investigation in December 2013 and sacked from his post in January last year.

Four months later, he was expelled from the Party for huge bribe-taking and “moral corruption,” a term often used to describe people with multiple mistresses. He was arrested in June 2014 and his trial was held in April of this year.

Among the people found to have bribed him were four executives from Sanqiao Group Co, based in Zhuhai, south China’s Guangdong Province, who paid him more than 1.5 million yuan.

Chen pleaded guilty in court and expressed regret for his actions.

“I accept any punishment. I became a criminal. My regret and sadness are beyond words. I really hate myself,” he said.

Meanwhile, a former senior political adviser in east China’s Zhejiang Province has been expelled from the Party for severe disciplinary violations, the Party’s watchdog said yesterday.

Si Xinliang, erstwhile vice chairman of Zhejiang committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has been accused of taking huge bribes in return for using his influence to seek profits and promotions for others, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said.

Information relating to the allegations has been handed to prosecutors for criminal investigation, it said.

As well as the graft allegations, Si is facing charges of interfering with an investigation into his suspected misdeeds.
