Corrupt officer rapes detainee

A DETENTION house official in north China has been jailed for 5 1/2 years for taking bribes and raping a female detainee as well as freeing the victim before her term was over, today's Dahe Daily reported.

Muye District People's Court in Henan Province's Xinxiang City yesterday announced the verdict on Wang Wenyuan, vice director of an unnamed detention house in Xinxiang, the newspaper said.

Wang is convicted of taking 12,770 yuan (US$1,870) in cash and gifts from families of detainees from March 2008 to 2009.

From April 2008, Wang began raping a female pickpocket who was serving time. In return, he gave her favorable treatment to the detainee and freed her two hours before her release was due.

Wang has returned the money and gifts, the report said.
