Corrupt official executed in Hunan

THE former deputy Party secretary of Chenzhou in Hunan Province, Zeng Jinchun, was executed this morning for accepting bribes and owning a large number of unjustified properties, Hunan Morning Post reported.

The verdict said Zeng accepted bribes worth 31.51 million yuan (US$4.76 million) during his office from late 1997 to September 2006. He also held real estate of unexplained origin valued over 9.52 million yuan (US$1.44 million).

An earlier report in China Youth Daily said Zeng was in charge of license approval for local coal mines, which gave him the opportunity to get bribes, and he was extremely powerful in the area. When Zeng was arrested in 2006, Chenzhou residents even celebrated with fireworks.

In a separate case, the former vice mayor of Yibin City in Sichuan Province, Chen Guangli, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on Tuesday for taking bribes. His brother Chen Guangming was sentenced to six years in prison for money laundry, China News Service reported.

Chen accepted bribes totaling more than 23 million yuan (US$3.48 million) in cash and a vehicle worth 1.03 million yuan (US$155,733). His brother kept the ill-gotten money for Chen and used it for investment.
