Costly purifier is no breath of fresh air
ONE of the most expensive air purifiers recently tested by the China Consumers’ Association was found to be the least efficient.
The purifier made by US-based Healthway was priced at 11,730 yuan (US$1,891) — the second highest among 25 tested.
But it was found to have the poorest purifying efficiency in dealing with both particulate matter and formaldehyde, according to the association.
Its purifying efficiency for particulate matter was only one sixth of the best performer’s figure. And in terms of purifying formaldehyde, the top performer was eight times more efficient than the Healthway model, the association said.
In the test, purifiers made by TCL and Yadu also performed poorly.
Air purifiers tested were bought at random from home appliance markets, supermarkets and department stores in Beijing and Tianjin. Prices ranged from 599 yuan to 18,700 yuan.
The association advised consumers looking to buy an air purifier to establish what area they could treat — something which some manufacturers neglected to mention, said officials.
