Counterfeit dealers sentenced over CCTV tower fire

THREE people who sold sub-standard building materials that were blamed for a skyscraper fire in Beijing last year were sentenced to 2 1/2 years and 4 1/2 years in prison yesterday. The fire killed one firefighter and destroyed a side building in China Central Television's new complex.

The convicts' company, Zhongshan Shengxing Ltd, was fined 1.1 million yuan by the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court for providing fake and low-quality sheets for the fa?ade walls of the CCTV building. The fire was caused by fireworks last February.

The company's vice president Tang Zhuchuang, project manager Gu Xianshu, and quality inspector Li Shuzhi were also ordered to pay fines from 5,000 yuan (US$758) to 30,000 yuan.

The company purchased 170,000 yuan worth of sheets, about 4,000 square meters in total, from another supplier, Langfang Huneng, and resold the sheets to the CCTV building contractor in December 2006.

But a test conducted by Beijing Quality and Technology Supervision Bureau showed the sheets failed the flame-retardant test in May 2007. The company concealed the test report and didn't replace the installed sheets.
